Q: How do I pay for the Customs tax when sending a gift (hand tool costs US$300.00) to Thailand ?
A: According to the Customs Department, the tariff rate of hand tool (made from metal and no mechanical items, i.e. motor) is 20% of the price indicated in the invoice, which in your case is approximately US $60. However, the tariff will be finally concluded when the customs officer sees the gift
If you send the gift by post or by air freight, the receiver has to pay for the tariff. There is no other method of payment that you, as the sender, can pay for the tariff, such as at the post office or by cheque.
However, you may send the gift through logistics company, namely DHL and UPS. You can then decide whether you would like to pay customs tariff for the receiver or not. If you wish to pay tariff for the receiver, the logistics company will advance the tariff and bill you later. This is very practical. You just inform the company that you would like to pay for the tariff. For more detailed information, please contact the logistics company directly.
